▶Dear sarang church, christ is risen! It is such a great privilege for me to speak to you again on this very special day and special occasion. every time I think of your church, I am filled with admiration and gratitude for what God is doing through you, not just in South Korea, but all around the world. recently, I was looking at your website and I saw that your current focus is Jesus' heart. And I thought to myself, that's exactly what we need today, to be people who reflect the very heart of Jesus. We need to be Jesus people. As I looked closer, I noticed five powerful aspects that define Jesus' heart. Heal the brokenhearted, equip disciples, teach God's word, revitalize churches, awaken prayer life.
Now, speaking of healing the brokenhearted, do you remember that a few years ago I shared with you the story of a poor family who donated two goats to support our church construction project? It was such a humble, sacrificial gift given with so much love and faith during a time when we ourselves had so little. Well, recently the same family has been going through a very difficult season. So last Christmas we had the joy of blessing them so we were able to provide them with a cow just as a small expression of God's care and our gratitude. While we were visiting them, they shared something heartbreaking.
The modest place they were living in wasn't even theirs and they were told that they have to soon leave the place. They have two small children and no place to go. So right now, as a church, we are doing everything we can to build a home for them and to bless them in this way. Not just a house, but we are building a future for them, a safe place for their children to grow up knowing that they are seen by God, they are loved, and they are not forgotten. Because we believe the church needs to heal the brokenhearted. You are an example of faith, vision and passion that motivates us to keep growing. so, this morning I want to focus for a few moments on a special prayer moment from the life of the new testament church.
in acts 12 we read that it was about this time that King Herod arrested some of some of the disciples that belong to the church and he had James the brother of John put to death with sword when he saw that this met with approval among Jews. He proceeded to seize Peter also. This happened during the festival of Unleavened Bread. After arresting him, he put him in prison, handing him over to be guarded by four squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring him out for the public trial after the Passover. So James is killed. And we have every reason to believe that the church prayed for James too, to be delivered.
Maybe they gathered, they fasted, they cried out to God just like they did for Peter. But this time nothing happened. God had other plans. And now Peter is in prison. And the church could have said, what's the point of praying again? Prayer didn't work for James. Why keep asking if God didn't answer last time? It takes faith to pray for Peter when you just lost James. It takes faith to believe in this situation because you know when you've seen him move the mountain and you believe that he can do it again, that's one thing. But when the mountain is still there and when you got to pray about that one, that is a very difficult moment. But they didn't stop. They didn't say that prayer is not working anymore. The church was earnestly praying to God for him, for Peter.
Even with fresh disappointment in their hearts because of James, even with grief of losing James, even with questions that they couldn't answer, they still gathered, they still prayed, they still believed what a powerful testimony and now they are at the house of Mary the mother of John Mark and many people had gathered and they were praying please notice that they were having a dawn prayer service at the house of Mary mother of John Mark the Bible doesn't say that They prayed for five minutes and then they left. No, they stayed together. They prayed earnestly, meaning with intensity, with focus, with faith. Their prayers were bold prayers. You know what I love about this story?
That Peter is in prison, but the church is praying with intensity, with focus and with faith. And just like you pray at Sarang Church. And then suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared, appeared to Peter right there in prison. And friends, chains fall off, doors opened by themselves and guards didn't even notice one thing. And here is the truth. The church prayed and God sent the angel. The church prayed. And God did the impossible. The prison door opened without a key. And so far, everything seems to be perfect and amazing in this story of faith. But then Peter gets out of prison. And finally, he arrives at the house of prayer and he knocks on the door.
And you would expect that the people that were praying for a miracle would be the first to receive it. You would expect that the prayer door, the door of Mary's house, would open faster than the prison door. But look what happened. Peter knocked at the outer entrance, says the Bible, and a servant named Rhoda, came to answer the door. When she recognized Peter's voice, she was so overjoyed that she ran back without opening the door and exclaimed, Peter is at the door Now, what would you expect the church to answer to Rhoda when she told them that Peter is at the door? They should have said, Hallelujah Praise God! God answer our prayers! God, Kamsahamnida!
But they looked at Rhoda and you know what they said to her? You are out of your mind. It must be his angel Church, can you believe that the prison door opened? easier than the prayer door The prison door opened easier than the freedom door. How ironic is that? it was easier for them to believe that Peter died and his angel came to the door and that it was actually Him. Sometimes it is easier for you to believe that you are worthless. It is easier for you to believe that it is over than it is for you to believe that dry bones can live again and the Lord is working, is at work. They had faith to pray, but not also faith to believe the answer when it comes.
Because sometimes it's easier to pray when the situation feels impossible than to believe when the miracle is knocking at the door. And for them, the miracle was there knocking at the door. And sometimes when we pray for a breakthrough, but when the breakthrough knocks, we don't open the door. Sometimes we ask God for healing, restoration, salvation. But when the answer shows up, we hesitate, we doubt, we explain it away. And sometimes we pray for miracle. And when the miracle is knocking at the door, but it's hard to recognize it. Let me share with you a story of a friend of mine. He's from United States. He's a pastor in United States. And one day he went on a mission trip to Africa. So there in Africa he was preaching a powerful sermon and he was preaching with a lot of passion about Jesus healing a blind man.
He talked about faith, he talked about miracles and about God's power to restore sight. And at the end of the message a man came forward and he said to my friend, Pastor, do you believe what you just preached? And he said, Yes, I do. And the man said, Look, I am blind, so I want you to pray for me and I want you to pray that God will give me sight. So my pastor friend prayed for him with all the faith he could find in that moment and he laid hands on this man. Then he went back to US and he forgot all about it. But two weeks later after he arrived home, A missionary called him and said, Hey, do you remember the blind man you were praying for? And he said, Yes, I do. Well, can you believe that he can see now?
And you know what my pastor friend answered that very moment? He said to the missionary, he said, I cannot believe it. I can't believe it. And he told me I had to buy a plane ticket and I had to fly back to Africa and I had to see it with my own eyes that this man got back his side because I could not believe that God did such a miracle. I think, friends, I think a lot of us we pray for things or hope for things or secretly wish for things that we really don't believe that they can happen. Peter is at the door and he is still knocking. They were praying but they weren't expecting. They were believing enough to ask but not enough to recognize the answer.
But what I love about this story is that God is honoring even a bold prayer with an imperfect faith. They had little faith, but it was enough faith to open the prison door and the prayer door. And I hear God saying to somebody today, Don't stop knocking. You are at the right door. Don't stop knocking just because Rhoda ran back and people didn't believe. God can use the imperfect faith of a hurting church. to break Peter out of prison. If you keep seeking and if you keep knocking, I declare in the name of Jesus that Peter is at the door. Healing is at the door. Freedom from bondage is at the door. Salvation is at the door. And the only way for you to find out is to open it. Pray with expectation.
Pray and expect God to do something significant, especially that my friends, Korean church is known to be a church that prays with expectation. You know? As I speak to you today about awakening prayer, I can't help but think about a powerful moment in your own history. It is the great Pyongyang revival in 1907, revival that happened in Pyongyang in North Korea. There were intense prayer meetings, public confessions, and a deep sense of repentance. The revival led to significant increase in Christian conversions and established a strong foundation for Protestant Christianity in Korea. It started with humble believers gathering together just like the early church in Acts 12.
They confessed their sins. They prayed with tears. They cried out for God to move and God did. And the revival swept across Korean peninsula and churches were filled and lives were transformed. And missionaries from around the world looked at Korea and said, This is the Book of Acts happening again. Do you know what historians called it? The Korean Pentecost? And what God did in Acts 12, what he did in Pyongyang in 1907, I believe with all my heart that he can do again. In our time, in this generation, in this church and through this church, we don't need just more programs or strategies. We need a fresh awakening of prayer. So friends, let us pray again. Let us knock again.
Let us open the doors and believe that revival is still possible. Jesus said, I stand at the door and knock and if you will open the door to me, I will sit down with you and I will eat with you and I have prepared the table for you in the presence of your enemies. And I am your shepherd and I am your angel and I am your light and I am your defender and I am your hope. and I am your promise. And upon this rock I will build the church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it. For I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. I died and I live and Christ is risen. God bless you, church.

최근 여러분의 웹사이트를 보며, 교회의 현재 초점이 “예수님의 마음”이라는 것을 보게 되었고, 제 마음속으로 ‘그래, 바로 지금 이 시대에 우리가 가장 필요로 하는 것이구나’라고 생각했습니다. 우리는 예수님의 마음을 반영하는 사람이 되어야 합니다. 예수님의 사람들이 되어야 합니다. 그리고 그 마음을 구성하는 다섯 가지 강력한 요소가 있다는 것을 보았습니다. 상한 마음을 치유하고, 제자를 세우며, 하나님의 말씀을 가르치고, 교회를 새롭게 하며, 기도 생활을 깨우는 것이었습니다.
상한 마음을 치유하는 것에 대해 말하자면, 몇 년 전 제가 여러분에게 나눴던 한 가난한 가정의 이야기를 기억하시나요? 그 가정은 교회 건축 프로젝트를 위해 염소 두 마리를 헌금했습니다. 우리도 형편이 넉넉하지 않았던 시절이었지만, 그 가족은 큰 믿음과 사랑으로 겸손하게 희생적인 선물을 주셨습니다. 최근 그 가족이 다시 큰 어려움을 겪게 되었고, 지난 크리스마스 때 그들에게 소 한 마리를 선물로 드릴 수 있는 기쁨을 누렸습니다.
그들을 방문했을 때, 마음 아픈 이야기를 들었습니다. 그들이 살고 있던 작은 집은 자기 집이 아니었고, 곧 나가야 한다는 통보를 받은 상태였습니다. 아이 둘이 있었고, 갈 곳이 없는 상황이었습니다. 그래서 저희 교회는 지금 그들을 위해 집을 짓고 있습니다. 단지 집이 아니라, 아이들이 하나님께서 자신들을 보고 계시고 사랑하고 계시며 결코 잊지 않으셨다는 것을 알고 자랄 수 있는 미래를 짓고 있는 것입니다. 왜냐하면 교회는 상한 심령을 치유하는 공동체이기 때문입니다. 여러분은 믿음과 비전과 열정의 본이 되어주고 계시며, 우리로 하여금 계속해서 성장할 수 있도록 힘을 줍니다.
이 아침에 저는 신약 교회에서 일어난 한 특별한 기도 사건에 대해 집중해 보려고 합니다. 사도행전 12장을 보면, 헤롯 왕이 교회의 몇몇 제자들을 잡아들였고, 요한의 형제 야고보를 칼로 죽였습니다. 이 일이 유대인들에게 인기가 있자, 헤롯은 베드로도 체포합니다. 무교절 기간이었고, 베드로는 감옥에 갇히게 됩니다. 4명씩 4조로 이루어진 16명의 군사들이 그를 지켰습니다. 그리고 6절, 교회는 간절히 하나님께 베드로를 위해 기도합니다.
여기서 중요한 점은, 교회가 야고보를 위해서도 기도했을 것이라는 점입니다. 금식하고, 모여서 울며 간절히 기도했겠죠. 하지만 그때는 아무 일도 일어나지 않았습니다. 하나님께서는 다른 계획을 갖고 계셨습니다. 이제 베드로가 감옥에 갇혔습니다. 이때 교회는 이렇게 말할 수도 있었을 겁니다. "기도해봤자 소용없잖아. 야고보도 못 살렸는데 뭘 또 기도해?" 그럼에도 불구하고 교회는 기도했습니다.
실망이 가득한 마음에도, 슬픔 가운데서도, 풀리지 않는 질문 속에서도 교회는 모였습니다. 그들은 마가의 어머니 마리아의 집에서 함께 기도했습니다. 성경은 “잠깐 기도하고 흩어졌다”고 말하지 않습니다. 그들은 함께 모여, 간절하게, 믿음을 가지고 기도했습니다.
그런데 놀라운 일이 일어납니다. 천사가 베드로의 감옥에 나타났고, 쇠사슬이 풀리고 문이 저절로 열리고, 군인들은 아무것도 눈치채지 못합니다. 교회가 기도했고, 하나님이 천사를 보내셨습니다. 교회가 기도했기에, 하나님께서 불가능을 가능케 하셨습니다. 감옥의 문이 열렸습니다. 열쇠도 없이... 하지만, 이제 베드로는 기적적으로 집에 도착해서 문을 두드립니다. 당연히, 기도하던 사람들이 가장 먼저 기적을 받아들여야 할 것 같지 않나요? 그런데 기적을 위해 기도하던 사람들이 정작 기적 앞에서 문을 열지 않습니다.
문을 두드리는 베드로를 보고, 로데라는 여종이 너무 기뻐서 문도 열지 않고 달려가 말합니다. “베드로가 문 앞에 있어요!” 그러자 사람들이 뭐라고 말합니까? “너 미쳤구나. 아마 그의 천사일 거야.” 감옥의 문은 열렸는데, 기도의 집 문은 열리지 않았습니다. 자유의 문보다 감옥의 문이 더 빨리 열린 겁니다.
가끔 우리는 이렇게 믿습니다. “나는 무가치해.” “이 일은 끝났어.” 말라버린 뼈가 다시 살아날 수 있다고 믿는 것보다, 포기하는 것이 더 쉬울 때가 있습니다. 기도할 믿음은 있었지만, 응답이 왔을 때 그것을 믿고 받아들일 믿음은 없었던 것이죠.
저의 친구 목사님 이야기 하나를 나누고 싶습니다. 그는 미국에서 목회를 하다가 아프리카로 단기 선교를 떠났습니다. 그곳에서 그는 예수님께서 맹인의 눈을 고치신 사건을 열정적으로 설교했습니다. 예배 후 한 맹인이 다가와 말했습니다. “목사님, 방금 설교한 것을 정말 믿으십니까?” “예, 믿습니다.” “그렇다면 제 눈을 위해 기도해 주세요.” 그래서 친구는 온 힘을 다해 기도했습니다. 그리고 미국으로 돌아왔습니다. 그 일은 곧 잊혀졌죠. 그런데 2주 후, 아프리카의 선교사로부터 전화가 왔습니다. “그 맹인 기억하시나요?” “네, 기억합니다.” “그 사람이 지금 시력을 되찾았습니다!” 그러자 친구가 대답한 말이 무엇인지 아십니까? “믿을 수가 없습니다.”
정말로 그는 비행기표를 사서 다시 아프리카로 갔고, 직접 맹인이 눈을 뜬 것을 확인해야 했습니다. 왜냐하면 자기 기도를 통해 그런 기적이 일어났다는 것을 믿을 수 없었기 때문입니다. 많은 사람들이 그런 마음을 가지고 있습니다. 기도는 하지만, 그 일이 정말 일어날 것이라고는 믿지 않는 것입니다.
베드로는 문 앞에 있습니다. 계속 두드리고 있습니다. 우리는 기도하지만, 기대하지는 않습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 하나님은 완전하지 않은 믿음도 사용하십니다. 작은 믿음이지만, 그것으로 감옥의 문도, 기도의 문도 열렸습니다. 하나님은 오늘 누군가에게 이렇게 말씀하십니다: "계속 두드리라. 너는 지금 올바른 문 앞에 있다." 로데가 돌아갔다고, 사람들이 믿지 않는다고 멈추지 마세요. 하나님은 상처 입은 교회의 불완전한 믿음도 사용하십니다. 자유가 문 앞에 있습니다. 치유가 문 앞에 있습니다. 구원이 문 앞에 있습니다. 그 문을 여는 유일한 방법은, 믿음으로 두드리는 것입니다.
한국 교회는 기대하며 기도하는 교회로 유명합니다. 그 이야기를 하면서, 저는 1907년 평양 대부흥을 떠올리지 않을 수 없습니다. 회개의 눈물, 뜨거운 기도, 진심 어린 고백들… 그것이 한국 교회를 세운 부흥의 불꽃이었습니다. 세계의 선교사들은 이렇게 말했습니다: “이것이 바로 사도행전이다.” “코리안 오순절이다.”
하나님께서 사도행전 12장에서 하셨고, 1907년 평양에서 하셨던 부흥을, 지금 우리 시대에도 다시 하실 수 있습니다. 우리는 더 많은 프로그램이 필요한 것이 아닙니다. 우리에겐 기도의 새 깨어남이 필요합니다.
그러니 사랑하는 여러분, 다시 기도합시다. 다시 두드립시다. 그리고 그 문을 믿음으로 엽시다. 예수님께서 말씀하셨습니다: “보라, 내가 문 밖에서 두드리노니, 누구든지 문을 열면 내가 그에게로 들어가 그와 함께 먹고 마시리라.” 나는 너의 빛이고, 너의 방패이며, 너의 소망이고, 너의 약속이다. 나는 교회를 세울 반석이며, 지옥의 문도 이기지 못하리라. 나는 처음과 마지막이요, 죽었으나 지금 살아 있는 이니라. 예수 그리스도께서 살아나셨습니다. 사랑의 교회, 하나님께서 여러분을 축복하시길 기도합니다.
