I love the beloved Sauron Community Church, and I want to send my greetings to Doctor John O as the senior pastor and also my, my friend Sam Koh, who coordinates global missions for sarong. It's been good to worship with you in the past on a number of occasions, including for early morning prayer. And I admire your commitment to God's kingdom, your commitment to Korea, your commitment to the church around the world, your commitment to the gospel of Jesus Christ. I have in front of me psalm 126, which is a great psalm of the faith and one of the psalms of ascent that the people of God used to sing as they went up to Jerusalem. And here is what the word of God says. When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dream. Then our mouth was filled with laughter and our tongue with shouts of joy. And then they said, among the nations, the Lord has done great things for them. The Lord has done great things for us. Like streams in, in the Negev, those who sow in tears shall reap with shouts of joy. He who goes out weeping, bearing seed for the sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, bringing his sheaves with him. This is the word that God has promised to bless to our minds and to our hearts, and a word I hope will be encouraging to you. As I was preparing to preach from this passage, I came across the story of Petter Yasik. Petter was a minister in communist Czechoslovakia. And while he was there, he was captured by the intelligence service at the airport, and he was put in a small prison cell with five terrorists from Isis. It was a desperate situation. He prayed for God to deliver him. He hoped that there were other christian people that were praying for him. But as time went on and as someone gave him a bible to read, and he was able to read it from COVID to cover, and as he began to witness to his fellow inmates and began to see some of them come to Christ, he stopped praying for God to deliver him from prison. He started to pray that God would just keep him faithful in prison as he continued to carry out the work of the gospel. Then something happened that really sent Petir Yasik into despair. And he wasn't even sure if he could survive a life sentence. He would never see his family again. It was a deeply discouraging time. But he kept turning to the scriptures for consolation and encouragement. And one day, he was in the little prison courtyard, and he came to psalm 126, and he read these words. When the Lord brought back the captivity from Zion, we were like those who dream. And no sooner had he finished reading psalm 126 than one of the prison guards came up to him and said, today you will be released from prison. He could hardly believe it. It was actually just like the psalm being delivered from captivity and not even being able to believe it. It was like you were dreaming. It was so amazing and so joyful. As the other prisoners hugged me and they rejoiced over my release, we were shouting for joy. And he said, although I gave my life to Christ when I was 15 years old, I think it has more meaning now when I say, Lord, the rest of my life is yours. You brought me out of prison. You saved me from a life sentence. The rest of my life is yours. It's in your hands. Here I am. I want to serve you for the rest of my life. Well, hopefully, that's the same commitment that you've made to Jesus, to serve him with the whole rest of your life. And psalm 126 encourages us to follow through on that commitment because it assures us that there is a God who answers prayer and rescues his people. It references a time of captivity and a return to the city of God, to Zion, to the great city of Jerusalem. And this is from the end part of the psalms, book five that runs from psalm 107 through psalm 150. And these are psalms that, for the most part, were written to celebrate God's work with his people during their years of captivity in Babylon and then their return. If you know your Old Testament history, you know the people of God were held captive for some 70 years in Babylon, and, you know that was not a time of singing. If you look at psalm 137, that famous psalm, just a little bit later in the psalter, the people say, how can we even sing when we're in captivity? We're not at our in in. We're not in the city of God. We're not back home in Jerusalem. We're gonna set aside our instruments. We're not gonna sing any. We can't even do it because we're weeping so much with despair over the suffering that we're going through. And maybe you felt at times that your life is like that, and maybe you're going through times of difficulty right now, shedding tears for your children or grandchildren, really in despair over your situation at work. Maybe deeply concerned about the spiritual struggle that Korea is in today or concerned about the world situation for the church. There are many tears of lament that we could shed for the challenges that we face in this fallen world. But psalm 126 is about deliverance and about the joy comes when God releases you from captivity, when you're delivered from bondage to sin, perhaps first come to faith in Jesus Christ, or when you see the Holy Spirit work in your life in a powerful way to break some form of bondage, or when you see God working that way in somebody else's life. And it was like this for the children of Israel when they received the news that they would be freed from Babylon and be able to travel back to their home in Jerusalem. These were words to sing and not just to say, not just to read. And we can add our testimony to the testimony of the people of God. In Old Testament times. The Lord has done great things for us. To God be the glory. Maybe you know this famous hymn to God be the glory, great things he has done. It's really an echo of psalm 126 and as many reasons as the children of Israel had to give God the praise, we have even more reasons. Because of our salvation in Jesus Christ. We have an eternal salvation. We have a home in heaven. We've been delivered fully from the bondage of sin. Now I want you to notice in this psalm that the first half of the psalm is all about praise and rejoicing. It's answered prayer and the joy that comes when you see God work. But you'll notice when you turn to verse four, the second half of the psalm, there's a change in perspective and perhaps a change in situation because the psalmist says, restore our fortunes, Lord. So now this is a time of difficulty and discouragement. And the psalmist is saying, Lord, you answered our prayers in the past and it brought us great joy. You've seen God answer many prayers in your life for the people you love, also for the ministry of Sauron Community Church. But there's a need for God to answer those prayers again. Think of the great things that God has done in Korea in past years. I think of the Pyongyang revival. I think of the way that welsh and then later english and american missionaries brought the gospel to Seoul. Seasons of revival, people that gave their lives for the gospel, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. When Billy Graham came to Seoul for his famous crusades. Billy Graham, Wheaton College alum who studied right in Blanchard hall, the building you see behind me, these are some of the things that God has done in Korea and the tremendous global work of missions that has come through korean churches, and that work is going on all over the world today. Restore our fortunes, do again a work of grace, of revival, of sending out missionaries. Start with me with the work that you need to do in my life. Psalm 126 is a prayer of celebrating answered prayer. And it's a psalm of coming back to God again in prayer to ask him to do the same kinds of things that he's done in the past. As the psalmist describes his situation, you get a sense it's a time of great difficulty. He mentions the Negev, which is the very dry part of Israel in the south. It runs from the runs all the way down to the Red Sea. It's effectively a desert. It's a very dry place. The water doesn't run there except when there are occasional rains. And that's what the psalmist is imagining. But when you're in the desert, there are places where you can see a dry riverbed. There's no water in it, but you can tell there's been water there before. And if the rains fall, perhaps in the mountains, the water will rush down again and it will again fill the desert and the flowers will bloom and there will be a place for the birds to get the sustenance that they need. The waters do sometimes come to the desert places, and that's what the psalmist is asking for. Lord, come to this dry place, fill it with water and help things flourish again. And he also uses this analogy of sowing and reaping a farmer planting seed in the ground and then waiting for God to bring the harvest. Maybe it's a little surprising for you to see this farmer weeping as he plants the seed. All it has left are the seeds that are left from the harvest from the year before. And they're going to have to plant those seeds in the ground. They're not going to be able to eat those seeds. They need to plant them so that again, something will grow and God will be able to sustain them. That's the picture here at the end of the psalm. And there are times in life when we're doing God's kingdom work, and there are a lot of tears that go with it because it's hard and because we don't seem to see any fruitful results. So we have to keep laboring in the hope of a coming harvest. And this psalm gives us such great assurance that if we're faithful to God's work and if we persevere in that work, our labor is not in vain, and one day there will be a harvest. And when they arrived at the place where they wanted to proclaim the gospel, the king of the local tribe said, you can't live here. We don't want anything to do with any other gods. You're going to have to live outside the community. There was only one person that they had an opportunity to contact. It was a little boy from the village who would go out every day to sell them eggs and perhaps from time to time, a chicken. And the missionary wife, whose name was Faia Flood, proclaimed the gospel to that little boy every day. Well, sadly, in a time of childbirth, she gave birth to her firstborn, a daughter, and then died just a few weeks later. Her husband was in despair. He was angry with God that his wife had been taken away from him. He gave up on the mission field. He gave his daughter to another missionary family. He went back home to Sweden.
